Team Time Trials

Ride Details

  • We assemble at Burnham Wharf at 2:45pm for a 3:00pm start.

  • The ride is to the first roundabout in Lyall Bay and back (roughly 30 km).

  • Teams with five or so riders of similar ability race with handicaps based loosely on Taupo times.

  • Each team's time is taken off the second to last rider. This means you can only drop one rider, and this applies even if you start with an extra rider. So, to win, you need to stay together.

  • There will be drinks afterwards at the Brewery Bar (Think this is now called Macs – it’s the one opposite Circa Theatre).

Safety

  • Our time trials are not an all out race – safety must prevail over competitiveness.

  • We participate at our own risk, obeying all road rules.

  • You must appreciate that the roads are open, that normal road rules apply and ride accordingly. So the marshals can’t stop the traffic and you need to be especially careful at Chocolate Fish and through the narrow windy pieces. Be prepared to give way at the Lyall Bay roundabout.

  • We will appoint captains for each team. Prior to the start, the team must agree whether you will pull off to the left OR the right once you have done pulling at the front, so that the rest of your team can overtake you safely.

  • We need to be especially wary where one team passes another one. The passing team must pick a safe place to pass. The team being passed must allow the passing team to pass safely and pull away. You must not intersperse your team into the paceline of the passing team.

  • Signal and call out alerts to hazards. Avoid braking heavily.

  • Keep going straight after crossing the finish line. Don't turn around until well past the finish (to be sure you don't turn into the path of a faster rider).

  • Course will be checked for hazards before we start.

  • Provided we get these things right, the time trial is no more dangerous than any other ride around the bays.

  • Choosing to participate means choosing to agree and ride at your own risk.
